Aqara users will first gain access to Matter in December 2022 via the Aqara Hub M2 through an OTA (over-the-air) update, which will allow existing Aqara Zigbee devices to become compatible with Matter.

Aqara starts with a free software update in December for the Hub M2 to make many of Aqara’s existing Zigbee devices Matter compatible.

Aqara is on the way to having 160 Matter-compatible devices.

aqara 在 reddit 确认，目前的在售网关升级支持 matter ，但是子设备还是zigbee，Hub整体作为一个设备支持 matter。

另外再推出的新品会有部分原生支持 matter，可以直接通过蓝牙配对，接入智能音箱，作为 thread 设备。

To take advantage of the matter standard, at least software version 4.0.0 must be installed on the M2. Then the new entry “Bind to Matter (Beta)” appears in the hub’s advanced settings (“more settings”). Selecting it activates the pairing mode and displays a code on the smartphone screen.

With this code, the hub can be added to a matter ecosystem such as Apple Home or Google Home. The graphic representation as a QR code can be scanned via smartphone camera. Otherwise, the eleven-digit code can also be copied and pasted.

Apple Home or Google Home

Amazon and SmartThings do not support the “Bridge” device type.

Therefore, the Aqara Hub M2 can currently only be used together with Apple Home and Google Home.

To integrate the hub with Google Home, a 2nd generation Nest Hub or Nest Hub Max must be installed on the same network.
Apple Home requires a HomePod or Apple TV 4K to be installed and online on the same network.
The software update and the new matter functionality connect the Aqara hub with other systems via WLAN.

Aqara M2 Hub does not take over as a Thread Border Router, it remains a Zigbee Hub
