The Philips Hue hub has a basic design that is very portable. It basically connects simultaneously with your lighting equipment and the bulbs, along with a Wi-Fi connection. However, the Hue hub connects the smart lights to each other and your phone via Zigbee, a mesh network.

Can Philips WiZ work with Hue?

Unfortunately, no. The Philips WiZ bulbs are not compatible with Hue. This is because the WiZ bulbs operate on Wi-Fi while the Hue hub operates lights via Zigbee.

Why aren’t all Zigbee lights compatible with Philips Hue Hub?

Two alternate ZigBee standards have developed over time. The Zigbee Home Automation (ZHA) and Zigbee Light Link (ZLL). Zigbee 3.0 was developed to combine both these standards together. The Philips Hue hub was developed around Zigbee Light Link and Zigbee 3.0, which is why it will not work with Zigbee Home Automation devices.

How does Philips WiZ work?

The Philips WiZ includes a range of smart lights which come in different colors, Wi-Fi connectivity, and a range of fixtures as well.

Mostly, the WiZ works like any normal light bulb; by screwing it in to get light. However, they can also connect directly to your Wi-Fi connection, and you can easily operate them with the WiZ mobile application.

WiZ is cheaper, and everyone would prefer to buy the cheaper WiZ and make it work by connecting it to the Philips Hue hub instead of purchasing the Hue bulbs.

How does Philips Hue connect?

Hue lights and bulbs either support Zigbee or Bluetooth. They do not contain a Wi-Fi chip like many other devices. This means that they way you set them up is slightly different to normal. One big benefit is clear though: no more entering Wi-Fi passwords (or more realistically: forgetting the Wi-Fi password, then spending 10 minutes hunting for it!).
